Ratings Given to Each Book
Each title has one or two sets of ratings, one from an
AASL reviewer, one from a PLA reviewer, or both.
- O (Outstanding): Titles
with this rating are considered exceptional by the reviewer. Personal
reviews are written by committee members for Outstanding Titles, and
are listed in the back.
- G (General audience): Books
with a wide appeal and/or an expectation of lasting importance. Title
may also be of scholarly technical data on subjects of widespread, current
interest
- S (Special interest): Is
highly recommended for libraries with in-depth collections in the book's
particular subject.
- RG (Regional general): Is
of interest to readers in specific geographic areas.
- RS (Regional special interest):
Is of interest to special in-depth collections in a geographic area.
Age Ranges for Each Book
Books rated by members of the AASL carry an audience designation,
which recommends grade levels for each listing. Levels are EM (Elementary
School), MS (Middle School), JHS (Junior High School), HS (High School),
and P (Professional).
Introduction-AASL Selection Committee
Choosing materials for a school library requires time and
attention. With so many places to look for information concerning items
for collection development, University Press books have proven to be a
valuable resource for secondary school libraries in regards to content
and curricular correlation. The titles presented in this book represent
creative and scholarly titles submitted by AAUP member presses. All have
been reviewed by committee members of the American Association of School
Librarians and the Public Library Association.
Committee members are assigned specific subject areas,
review the submitted titles, and assign a rating. Those titles receiving
a rating of "Outstanding" are monographs "defined as having exceptional
editorial content and subject matter." "Outstanding" rated titles are
indexed and critiqued in the back by the reviewer(s). Dewey classifications
are included to assist the professional with selection maintenance.
The American Association of School Librarians is happy
to be a part of this collection development tool. Suggestions and comments
are encouraged.

Introduction- PLA Selection Committee
While school and public library book selectors may think
university press publications are "too specialized," or "too academic
for my patrons," such is not the case, as the members of this committee
can attest. This joint committee, made up of representatives from the
Public Library Association and the American Association of School Librarians,
evaluates university press publications chosen by the American University
Press Books Publication Selection Committee, a committee of the Association
of American University Presses.
Books are evaluated for their thoroughness, integrity,
readability, appeal and suitability for public or school library users.
The committee members review books by subject and assign one or more ratings
to each book:
- G -General Interest
- S -Specialized Interest
- R -Regional Interest
- RS -Regional Specialized
- O -Outstanding
Reviews are written for books rated "Outstanding." These
are grouped separately at the end of the book.
As PLA Chair of the committee, I would like to express
my thanks to the members of the committee for their hard work and commitment,
and especially to Rachel Weiss, AAUP liaison to the committee, for keeping
us on track, answering questions and coordinating our work with the various
university presses.
