Introduction-AASL Selection Committee
The 21st Edition of the University Press Books for Public and Secondary School Libraries is an invaluable resource for building secondary school library collections that meet curriculum needs and the diverse learning abilities and styles of students. This annual bibliography is an excellent resource to share with other educators and administrators to engage them in collection building and collaborate in planning for research based activities.
Titles included in the 2011 publication have been recommended by the American University Press Books Publication Selection Committee, a joint committee of practicing professionals and members of the American Association of School Librarians and the Public Library Association. Selections are not made based on price or format, but on content, and are an excellent assessment of content provided by the higher education community presented with substance and context not always available in the trade books found through standard collection development tools.
Listed in Dewey Decimal order with an author and title index at the back of the book, each listing includes a publisher supplied synopsis and ratings for both school and public library collections. Titles rated by reviewers as "Outstanding" publications appear in a separate section with an original annotation by the reviewer which recognizes the significant content, features, or uniqueness of the title.
Each year, panelists from the joint selection committee highlight their favorite selections at the Annual Conference of the American Library Association. The 2010 "The Best of the Best from the University Presses: Books You Should Know About" program was recorded by C-Span and can be viewed on their website at www.c-spanvideo.org/program/294474-1.
As chair of the AASL American University Press Books Selection Committee, I would like to sincerely thank the committee members for their time and efforts to carefully evaluate books submitted for review and to produce a quality selection tool for school librarians. Your suggestions and comments for making it more useful are always welcome.

From the office of the AASL
Introduction from PLA's University Press Book Reviewers Community of Practice
Welcome to the 21st edition of the AASL/PLA University Press Books bibliography!
Service on the committee is a delightful task. We work with Kim Miller in the AAUP marketing department. In early fall we send her our preferred Dewey subject areas. We get some of our preferences and are assigned others that aren't as familiar. The publishers select books they recommend for public and high school library collections. Review copies arrive in December. What a treat! We examine each and evaluate its suitability: for a general audience, for specialized, in-depth collections, for regional appeal. A select few come to the top of the stack as "outstanding." We provide individual reviews for those titles. At the ALA Annual Conference you have the opportunity to hear committee members talk about their "outstanding" choices."
I use the annual bibliography in two ways. It is a fine selection tool for my library's adult collection because it highlights books that are not always covered by review journals. I also use it as a reader's advisory tool. I find at least a dozen books that I want to read and include in my seasonal book reviews.
Appreciation is extended to Kim Miller of the AAUP marketing department who coordinates our committee work and the publication of the bibliography. Gratitude goes to AAUP member presses who supply review copies. Thanks is due to all the committee members who take time from their busy schedules to contribute to this collective effort.
