Introduction from AASL's American University Presses Book Selection Committee
The 23rd Edition of the University Press Books for Public and Secondary School Libraries is an invaluable resource for building secondary school library collections that meet curriculum needs and the diverse learning abilities and styles of students. This annual bibliography is an excellent resource to share with other educators and administrators to engage them in collection building and collaborate in planning for research based activities.
Titles included in the 2013 publication have been recommended by the American University Press Books Publication Selection Committee, a joint committee of members of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and members of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Selections are not made based on price or format, but on content, and are an excellent assessment of content from the higher education community presented with substance and context not always available in the trade books found through standard collection development tools.
Listed in Dewey Decimal order with an author and title index at the back of the book, each listing includes a publisher supplied synopsis and ratings for both school and public library collections. Titles rated by reviewers as "Outstanding" publications appear in a separate section with an original annotation by the reviewer which recognizes the significant content, features, or uniqueness of the title.
Each year, panelists from the joint selection committee highlight their favorite selections at the ALA Annual Conference. Presentations of "The Best of the Best from the University Presses: Books You Should Know About" previously recorded by C-Span and broadcast online can be viewed on their website at http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/Bestfrom.
As chair of the AASL American University Press Books Selection Committee, I would like to sincerely thank the committee members for their time and efforts to carefully evaluate books submitted for review and to produce a quality selection tool for school librarians. Your suggestions and comments for making it more useful are always welcome.

Introduction from
CODES/RUSA
American University Presses Book Selection Committee
Welcome to the 23rd edition of the University Press Books for Public and Secondary School Libraries bibliography.
I'm pleased to report that the Public Library Reviewers have found a new home in the Collection Development and Evaluation Section of the Reference and User Services Association – that's CODES/RUSA for short. Our committee charge has not changed and in this bibliography you will find our evaluations of dozens of 2012 imprints from U.S. and International university presses.
Librarians receive book recommendations constantly. We get library review journals, trade review journals and general-interest review publications. Publishers show their wares at conferences and send us catalogs and flyers and emails. There are dozens of booklovers' blogs. Patrons give us purchase requests. We have limited budgets with which to develop and maintain quality collections.
Of the hundreds of titles that AAUP member publishers produce each year, many get lost among reviews and recommendations. At the same time, many of these books deserve a wide audience and will be of interest to public library patrons.
We hope you will find our reviews helpful. If you will be attending the ALA Annual Conference, don't miss the Best of the Best program where our committee members will talk about their "outstanding" choices from this year's list.
