exceptional by the reviewer. Personal reviews are written by committee
members for Outstanding Titles, and
are listed at the end of the Bibliography.
-

with in-depth collections in the book’s particular subject.
-
RG (Regional general): Is of interest to readers in
specific geographic areas.
-

Books rated by the AASL librarian members carry
an audience designation that recommends grade levels for each listing.
Levels are EM (Elementary School, grades K-5), MS
(Middle School, grades 6-8), HS (High School, grades
9-12), and P (Professional Use).
How to Order Books Listed

are listed). Please do not order books from the Association of American
University Presses (AAUP) office. It has no facilities for handling such
orders.
How to Order Printed Bibliographies
Librarians may obtain printed copies of the bibliography
free of charge by writing on their institution’s letterhead and
mailing or faxing to: The AAUP, Attn.: Marketing Department, 28 West 36th St.,
Suite 602, New York, NY 10010. FAX: 212-989-0275. An online order form is also available.
Introduction from AASL's American University Presses Book Selection Committee
The 24th Edition of the University Press Books for Public and Secondary School Libraries is a useful collection development tool for school librarians seeking to meet the diverse curricular needs, interests, and learning styles within their institutions. This annual bibliography is also an excellent resource for engaging other educators and administrators in collaborative projects and research efforts.
Titles for the 24th edition were selected by the American University Presses Book Selection Committee. This joint committee of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the Collection Development and Evaluation Section of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA/CODES) recommends books based on content rather than on price or format. These texts provide substantive content from the university community that is not always available in trade books or found through standard lists and collection development tools.
Selections are listed in Dewey Decimal order and include a publisher-supplied synopsis and ratings for both school and public library collections. Those titles rated as "Outstanding" appear in a separate section and provide an original annotation by the reviewer which describes the significant content, features, or uniqueness of the book. An author and title index is also included at the back of the book.
Each year, panelists from the joint selection committee present their favorite recommendations at the ALA Annual Conference. This Best of the Best of the University Presses session, recorded and broadcast by C-Span, will be available for viewing on their website following the June 2014 conference. The 2013 presentation can be viewed at http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/313850-1.
As this year's chair of the AASL American University Presses Book Selection Committee, I would like to thank the committee members. I appreciate all of the time, effort, and care that they spend in evaluating books, writing reviews, and contributing to this valuable selection tool. Your comments and suggestion for making this publication more useful are always welcome.

Introduction from
RUSA/CODES
American University Presses Book Selection Committee
Welcome to the 24nd edition of the University Press Books for Public and Secondary School Libraries bibliography.
Librarians receive book recommendations constantly. We get library review journals, trade review journals and general-interest review publications. Publishers show their wares at conferences and send us catalogs and flyers and emails. There are dozens of booklovers' blogs. Patrons give us purchase requests. We have limited budgets with which to develop and maintain quality collections.
The UPB bibliography focuses on a publishing niche: U.S. and Canadian university presses. Of the hundreds of titles they produce each year, many get lost among reviews and recommendations. At the same time, many of these books deserve a wide audience and will be of interest to public library patrons.
We hope you will find our reviews helpful. If you attend the ALA Annual Conference, don't miss the Best of the Best program where our committee members talk about their "outstanding" choices from this year's list.
