General Information

Ratings Given to Each Book

Each title has one or two sets of ratings, one from an AASL reviewer, one from a RUSA/CODES reviewer, or both.

  • O (Outstanding): Titles with this rating are considered exceptional by the reviewer. Personal reviews are written by committee members for Outstanding Titles, and are listed at the end of the Bibliography.

  • G (General audience): Books with a wide appeal and/or an expectation of lasting importance. Title may also be of scholarly technical data on subjects of widespread, current interest.

  • S (Special interest): Is highly recommended for libraries with in-depth collections in the book’s particular subject.

  • RG (Regional general): Is of interest to readers in specific geographic areas.

  • RS (Regional special interest): Is of interest to special in-depth collections in a geographic area.

Age Ranges for Each Book

Books rated by the AASL librarian members carry an audience designation that recommends grade levels for each listing. Levels are EM (Elementary School, grades K-5), MS (Middle School, grades 6-8), HS (High School, grades 9-12), and P (Professional Use).

Introduction from AASL's American University Presses Book Selection Committee

This special 25th anniversary edition of the University Press Books for Public and Secondary School Libraries is a specialized collection development tool for school librarians seeking the best titles from outstanding university press publishers. Through a rigorous review process, a joint committee of reviewers from the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) evaluate books with a focus on assisting the school librarian with selecting materials of value and relevance from the expansive and highly esteemed university press publishers. I recommend that you use this tool to bring the writings of world renowned scholars to your shelves.

This bibliography should be utilized as a guide to select the best of rigorous study titles in specialized or emerging scholarship. The material has been vetted by their presses for validity and soundness and the committee for interest, readability, and timeliness. It is through the university press authors' tireless pursuit of scholarship and knowledge, and the presses generosity of resources, that the committee can bring you this bibliography. In addition—exploit the unique mission of university presses to embrace and promote local culture and history—to find that specialty gem, look for the Regional General (RG) and Regional Special Interest (RS) notation.

Titles are listed in Dewey Decimal order, include a publisher-supplied synopsis, and ratings for both school and public library collections. The titles that are rated "outstanding" appear in a separate section and provide an original annotation by the reviewer which describes the significant content, features or uniqueness of the book. An author and title index is also included at the back of the book.

Each year, panelists from the joint selection committee present their favorite recommendations at the ALA Annual Conference. This year, the Best of the Best of the University Presses session will be held in San Francisco, CA on Sunday, June 28, 2015, at 1:00 p.m.

As this year's chair of the AASL American University Press Books Selection Committee, I would like to thank the committee members. I appreciate all of the time, effort, and care that they spend in evaluating books, writing reviews, and contributing to this valuable selection tool.

Introduction from RUSA/CODES American University Presses Book Selection Committee

Welcome to the 25th edition of the University Press Books for Public and Secondary School Libraries bibliography.

Librarians are constantly receiving book recommendations from library review journals, trade review journals and general-interest review publications. Publishers show their wares at conferences and send us catalogs, flyers, and emails. There are dozens of booklovers' blogs. Patrons ask us to purchase materials. Most of us have limited budgets with which to develop and maintain quality collections.

The UPB bibliography focuses on a publishing niche: U.S. and Canadian university presses. Of the hundreds of titles they publish each year, many get lost among reviews and recommendations. Many of these books deserve wider audiences and will be of interest to public library patrons.

We hope you find the reviews helpful. If you attend the American Library Association Annual Conference in San Francisco, don't miss the Best of the Best program where our committee members talk about their "outstanding" choices from this year's list.

Thanks to the Association of American University Presses and Kim Miller for sending out books to those of us serving on this committee.
