Introduction from AASL's American University Presses Book Selection Committee
The 2016 edition of the University Press Books for Public and Secondary School Libraries is a specialized collection development tool for school librarians seeking the best titles from university press publishers. Through a rigorous review process, a joint committee of reviewers from the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) evaluates submitted titles. The AASL reviewers focus on assisting the school librarian with selecting materials of value and relevance from the great and highly esteemed university press publishers. I recommend that you use this tool to bring the writings of world-renowned scholars to your shelves.
Use this bibliography as a guide. Included are outstanding titles in specialized or emerging scholarship. University presses vet material for validity, soundness of scholarship and applicability to the committee's criteria. The committee reviews books for interest, readability, and timeliness for the K-12 audience. It is through the university press authors' tireless pursuit of scholarship and knowledge, and the presses generosity of resources, that the committee can bring you this bibliography. Look for unique topics which include specialized or regional interest. These titles are denoted by Regional General (RG) and Regional Special Interest (RS) notations.
The arrangement of titles is by Dewey Decimal order. Included in the bibliography are publisher-supplied synopses and ratings for both school and public library collections. The titles that are rated "outstanding" appear in a separate section and provide an original annotation by the reviewer which describes the significant content, features or uniqueness of the book. An author and title index is included at the back of the book.
Each year, panelists from the joint selection committee present their favorite recommendations at the ALA Annual Conference. This year, the Best of the Best of the University Presses session will be held in Orlando, FL on Sunday, June 26, 2016, at 1:00 p.m.
As this year's chair of the AASL American University Presses Book Selection Committee, I would like to thank the committee members. I appreciate the time, effort, and care taken in evaluating the books, writing reviews, and contributing to this valuable selection tool.

Introduction from
RUSA/CODES
American University Presses Book Selection Committee
Are university press books beyond the scope of most public libraries? The perception is often so. Such books are habitually thought to be scholarly texts written by academics for an audience comprised solely of other academics. Limited by budget constraints and driven by the demand to increase circulation, it is the rare public library that can afford to expend its resources on titles that, on the face of it, seem destined to become shelf sitters, odd cousins to bestsellers and literary darlings.
This committee serves as a wonderful and necessary correction to that mistaken perception. There are treasures published each year by university presses. Books that will delight readers who come upon them while browsing the stacks, books that fill out collections in smart and useful ways, books that support lifelong learning, and books that invite hours of fascinated perusal.
It is the mission of the University Press Books for Public and School Libraries Committee to find these gems and make them known to our fellow librarians. Members of the committee come from two divisions of the American Library Association: the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA).
Members dig into the yearly creations of researchers and college professors, policy makers and poets, theorists and scientists, searching for the books that will hold wide appeal to patrons. This bibliography showcases their finds, bringing to the attention of collection development staff the richness of university press books that are all too often lost to librarians who rarely see reviews of such books in standard trade journals and lack access to the academic sources that do review them.
Every title marked as Outstanding in this guide has been hand-selected for its usefulness, accessibility, and interest. The committee considers these the star reviews of the university press world and invites you to read through the accompanying annotations in hopes that you too will find books that enhance your collection. The remainder of the bibliography lists books in all subject classifications with indications as to their applicability to a public library. Works marked General spotlight titles that might nicely round out holdings, bringing accessible expertise to the collection. Regional titles showcase works of local interest while Specialized titles highlight those books that support the in-depth study of a topic.
On behalf of the committee and of CODES, I hope you find this bibliography helpful in your collection development efforts and that through its suggestions your patrons gain access to the treasures published by university presses.
