American Association of School Librarians (AASL),
Letter from the President
It is a privilege to present the 27th edition of the University Press Books for Public and Secondary School Libraries. Since 1967 the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the Association of American University Presses (AAUP) have worked in partnership to provide school librarians with this valuable tool for use in collection development. A special thank you goes to the members of the AASL University Press Book Selection Committee for their dedication and hard work, and this year their efforts have resulted in the publication of an outstanding bibliography highlighting the very best for 2017.
AASL represents the collective voice of school librarians to empower leaders to transform student learning. Likewise, on behalf of its member institutions. AAUP serves scholarly communications through professional education, cooperative services, and public advocacy. Both AASL and AAUP can be justifiably proud of their longstanding collaboration to produce a resource that helps each organization to fulfill its mission and to benefit school librarians in their effort to ensure that students and teachers have the best resources.
According to AASL’s position statement, Definition of Effective School Library Program, “Effective school libraries are dynamic learning environments that bridge the gap between access and opportunity for all K–12 learners. Under the leadership of the school librarian, the school library provides students access to resources and technology, connecting classroom learning to real-world events. By providing access to an array of well-managed resources, school libraries enable academic knowledge to be linked to deeper, personalized learning.” It is through resources such as these identified in the University Press Books for Public and Secondary School Libraries that students are able to engage in these rich learning experiences.
Again, sincere thanks to the AAUP and the AASL University Press Book Selection Committee. We are grateful to them for their commitment to the creation of this exceptional publication, and we hope that you will find it useful as you build your collection to enhance student learning.
AASL President, 2016-2017
